Neon once meant something. A hot meal. A cheap room. A cold beer. A place to pull off the road when you’d driven farther than you probably should have.

The Last Vacancy was made over two years of long miles, wrong turns, missed opportunities, locked doors, burned-out signs, and the occasional reward for showing up at exactly the right moment. Some places were gone before I got there. Others went dark minutes before I arrived. And every once in a while, somewhere out past the last sensible turn, a sign would flicker to life and make the whole drive worth it.

These photographs document the motels, diners, drive-ins, and roadside landmarks that still glow—or quietly wait—across the American West. They aren’t really about nostalgia. They’re about the joy of discovery, the stories still hanging around these places, and the strange satisfaction of finding something you weren’t entirely sure was still there.

Because eventually the neon goes dark. The buildings disappear. The road changes.

But for a little while longer, the vacancy sign is still on.
